What is a tattoo apprenticeship?

A tattoo apprenticeship is the traditional pathway into professional tattooing, where a trainee learns the craft under the direct mentorship of an experienced tattoo artist in a working studio. The apprentice works alongside their mentor, starting with foundational skills such as sterilisation, needle handling, line work, and colour theory before progressing to tattooing on live clients under supervision.

The arrangement is typically unpaid or low-paid during the training period, which usually lasts between two and four years. The apprentice gains practical knowledge that cannot be gained from textbooks alone: how to read skin, adjust technique for different body areas, manage client behaviour, handle complications, and build the physical and artistic precision the work demands.

This differs fundamentally from tattoo schools or online courses, which teach theory and basic technique in a classroom setting but do not provide the continuous, real-world experience of a working studio.
