What is the difference between coil and rotary tattoo machines?

Coil machines use electromagnetic coils to create a rapid up-and-down needle motion, while rotary machines use a rotating cam to drive needles in a similar pattern. Each design produces different needle speeds and puncture characteristics suited to different tattoo work.

Coil and rotary machines represent two fundamental approaches to needle movement in tattooing, differing in their mechanical operation and the feel of the needle strike.

A coil machine uses two electromagnetic coils positioned above a steel armature bar. When current passes through the coils, they magnetize and pull the armature upward, then release as the current switches. This creates a rapid buzzing motion that drives the needle in and out at speeds typically between 50 and 200 times per second, depending on settings and tuning. The motion is linear and percussive, generating the characteristic sound associated with traditional machines.

A rotary machine uses a rotating shaft fitted with an off-center cam or eccentric wheel. As the shaft spins, the cam followers attached to the needle bar rise and fall, converting circular motion into the linear up-and-down needle movement. Rotary speeds generally range from 60 to 150 revolutions per second, producing smoother, quieter operation than coils.

These differences shape how artists use them. Coil machines, particularly tight setups, excel at bold, crisp lining work and are favored for precise detail. The aggressive needle throw suits laying down clean edges. Rotary machines, with their gentler motion and adjustable speed, handle shading, color packing, and blending more comfortably for extended sessions. Many London tattoo artists maintain both types in their studios, switching between them depending on the phase of work.
